2019 - The Last USS Des Moines Reunion
2019 Reunion Minutes
U.S.S. DES MOINES REUNION ASSOCIATION MEETING
JULY 26, 2019
The U.S.S. Des Moines Reunion Association (the “Association”) reunion meeting was opened with the presentation of the flag followed by prayer by Chaplin Rich Kleebauer. There was the pledge of allegiance followed by the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. The names of the recently deceased Shipmates were read followed by a gun salute. Taps were performed by Joanne Wiley, wife of Shipmate Pat Wiley, now deceased.
The meeting was opened and the Minutes from last year’s meeting were read by Art Weeks, Jr., first announcing that there were no new members in attendance.
NEW BUSINESS
Discussion was held with regard to continuing the reunion or to seeking dissolution of the Association. After lengthy discussion by those present members, two votes were taken: the first vote recommended that the Association continue to hold the reunions. However, after further discussion, the second vote was for dissolution of the Association. Accordingly, the Association will cease to exist at the end of this day, July 26, 2019. It was then determined that Treasurer Barrett Ferguson, upon returning to Florida following this reunion, will issue the necessary documents to formally dissolve the Association with the appropriate federal and/or state entities.
There was a vote as to whether to refund members’ dues already paid for the year 2020. The attending members were reminded that, by federal law, all dues must be refunded. Those present received their 2020 dues refund prior to closing of the day; those members not in attendance will be receiving their 2020 dues refund by mail. The treasurer will issue refund checks to those members not in attendance upon his return to his home in Florida.
In light of the dissolution of the Association, Tim Overly has offered his home to those who wish to attend a party next year. No monies are required to be paid by the Shipmates for this party; however, donations will be accepted. It will be held the final weekend in July, 2020. Those interested can access the website, ussdesmoines.com, over the next few months for further information.
Art Weeks, Jr. (current Caretaker President), offered his appreciation for the outstanding work done by the President and Webmaster Gerald Manriquez and the Vice President Don King, both members whom have since resigned their positions.
SHIP STORES
Tim Overly, manager of the Ship Stores, indicated that total Ship Stores sales for the previous twelve months was $421. He indicated that the stores was a loosing proposition as some stores were returned for one reason of another, i.e., one shirt was returned due to a shipmate’s wife’s dislike of the Daisy Mae logo. A vote was held to accept the report, and the vote passed. All stores were put on sale to eliminate inventory.
WEBSITE
A discussion was held to determine whether the Association should continue with the website and, with a unanimous vote, it was decided that the website would continue. Shipmate and Webmaster Gerald Manriquez will be paid for his services in regard to the upkeep of the website.
NOTE: I Jerry Manriquez will donate my time and run the website at no charge to the Association, that includes the charges for the Domain Name and the Web Hosting.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Since the Association will no longer exist at the end of this day, July 26, 2019, no vote for officers was taken.
CLOSING CEREMONIES
Closing ceremonies were held for the final time, and a closing prayer was held by Chaplin Rich Kleebauer.
These Minutes were prepared and submitted by Caretaker Vice President, Roy Lammey, Jr.
