Tribute to the French People - by Jerry Aheron

A MESSAGE FROM VALERIE BLOUIN

APRIL 22, 2016
Jerry thank you so much for the pictures from the Des Moines Cruise Books and Newspaper!
We are also looking for any informations about surroundings like Beaulieu,  Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat, Nice and also Monaco.
We are in touch with Prince Albert of Monaco and he would be so pleased to receive photos or informations about his parents. I heard that the USS Des Moines was invited to Monaco for his baptismal. Is that right ?
Also if you have anything concerning the anglo-american School of Beaulieu and the American hospital.
Merci beaucoup for your help !
Valérie Blouin

If anyone has information on any of the above, send to the Web Master, Jerry Manriquez, jerjoman@att.net

Bloody Mary

I have attached several files as they relate to our old home
port of VilleFranche Sur Mer; they were provided to me by Jerry Aheron who served aboard the Daisey Mae circa 1958-60 in 5th division; Jerry related to me that he has made many trips back to VilleFranche over the years to honor Madame Edith Duhamel (AKA "Bloody Mary") who used to sell flowers in the port area. The attachments explain in detail the honor
bestowed upon our shipmate from the Mayer of Villefranche and some detailed info on Mme. Duhamel's heroic service during WWII. I have also attached a photo of Jerry on one of his trips back to Villefranche of him and Mom Germaines' daughter taken in the '80s.

Information on Madame Edith Duhamel (AKA "Bloody Mary") who used to sell
flower in the port area sent by shipmate Jerry Aheron, 5th Div, 1958-1960.  The Mayor of Ville thanked Jerry for the attention he brought to the lack of honor given to Bloody Mary.

Rememberance of Bloody Mary
by Donald P Shaffer

Jim..The story I told about her placing flowers at the admirals cabin door in 1956 was from my personal observation and there is no record of it either visual or otherwise.  A funny thing also happened when she came up the gangway to the O.D.  He was a 5' 10" LTJG named Welker and he tried to refuse her permission to come aboard with the flowers.  He argued with her for about 2 minutes and then let her come aboard. When she had a mission, you just didn't get in her way.
The part about her hoisting the battery into the 50 foot motor launch was also my personal observation from the same spot on the port quarter deck.  I was surprised at how short she was and the ease with which she hoisted that battery which had to weigh at least 30 pounds.
